Fountain , Colorado

Yesterday morning we woke up to 29 degrees in Flagstaff, Arizona. I went and got the oil changed and ran a couple other errands. When I got back to the trailer Jan said she was ready to get out of the cold (she didn't have to ask me twice, we packed up and drove back to New Mexico (spent the night in Santa Fe). Got up this morning and drove up to Fountain Colorado (a little south of Colorado Springs). Tonight we took Sara St John (our niece) out to dinner (Great Mexican, Amanda's Fonda), can't beat great food and great company!!

Flagstaff, KOA

This morning we moved from Williams , Az. to Flagstaff KOA. It was only 40 miles but the wind was brutal, couldn't get over 55 mph. We got set up here about noon and the winds blowing so much we have went back out in it. Kinda looks like will be here until Tuesday before heading toward Denver. At this point looks like we will probably go back east on I-40 to Albuquerque , then up I-25 to Denver.

Hermits Rest

There was a couple other stops, but figured you probably seen enough. So we made it to Hermits Rest and when we got back to where we started, on the walk back to our car we seen two Elk about a quarter a mile down the rail road tracks.

Mohave Point

This was the first water we spotted, amazing view

Hopi Point

This first picture I'm taking from Hopi Point was a ledge that was easily climbed down to from where we were (some people did), I thought about it for a second and about that time one of those 50 mph gust convinced me not to.

Powell Point

Powell Point there is a memorial to John Wesley Powell, first person to successfully travel the 277 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. These pictures are of what they call the Battle Ship Formation taken from Powell Point.

Maricopa Point

It was really windy, 20 to 30 mph winds with 50 mph gust. There was no helicopter flying and no Mule rides down the canyon. There are only a few rails at the Overlooks, but you could walk the entire Hermits rest route right along the canyon edge.

Hermits Rest Route

We started our day at the IMAX theater, where we watched a 35 minute movie on the history of the Grand Canyon and this first picture is Jan & I waiting to get on the Red Route Shuttle Bus, this is an area of the park that they don't allow any cars, it take you to nine canyon overlooks, seven miles out from Grand Canyon Village. The Second picture is at Trailview Overlook, looking back at the village. Here we seen two California Condors flying below us, but I couldn't get a good picture of them.

Williams, Arizona

We have arrived at the KOA Grand Canyon, it's five miles north of Williams, Arizona and about 50 miles south of the South Rim. We plan to go up to the South Rim tomorrow (I'm Excited!!). We just happened to get here right when the WIND arrived, they are forecasting gust up to 50 mph for the next two days. Oh well, we may have to be here and extra day.........

Traveling New Mexico

We left Santa Rosa New Mexico this morning and went to Albuquerque and had our hitch worked on (all they did was locktite the bolts and torqued them tighter)., anyway it worked.
So we moved on down the road to Grant (we are about 250 miles from Flagstaff).
I added these pictures of I and Jan cause I just got off the phone with Jessica and she said maya wanted to know where the pictures were of Grandma & Grandpa . Nothing real exciting today, but some beautiful country.

Santa Rosa, NM

We drove out of the bad weather this morning, but if was windy coming across Texas and New Mexico. We are having a little trouble with the new hitch and have contacted the company. They put me in touch with a place in Albuquerque (which we are only 120 miles from). So hoping they call me tonight or in the morning ( not a big deal either way,we can take care of it in Denver if need be).
I had to walk up to office to use internet, so this is it for tonight.

Elk City/Clinton Lake

We left Canton, Texas at 9:30AM, going through/around Dallas wasn't to harry. There was a lot of traffic, but we hit it pretty good. Getting through Oklahoma City wasn't as good (we got turned around once), but we made it. We decided not to stop there because weather report for tonight and tomorrow in Oklahoma City is chance of (tornado) severe!! So we thought we'd keep moving away from there. We are in a KOA in Elk City, Oklahoma, about 50 miles east of Texas border.

Monday, May 17, 2010

We left Vicksburg, Mississippi this morning a little after 10AM . Made to I-20 RV Park in Canton, Texas (50 miles east of Dallas). We were about 6 hours on the road today and didn't want to drive through Dallas tired. So far the trailer is hauling nicely, so no complaints.

U.S.S. Cairo

This is a Union Gunboat (one of four that was used) that was sunk (in the Mississippi River)by the Confederate Army using gun power in a barrel (under water) an electric charge, that was set off on by two Confederate Soldier's from land. It sank completely in 12 minutes with 175 soldier's on board, no one died, they got off safely.
The picture at the top is a drawing of (land mine/bomb) what the Confederates used.
They started bringing pieces of the U.S.S. Cairo up from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1960, and since it sank so fast, they got a lot!

Coming into Mobile, Alabama

Leaving Florida After 13 hours from Naples

We left Port of the Islands around 10:30am, cruised right along and stopped in Tallahassee about 6:30pm for dinner. Jan surprized me by saying, let's drive on to Mariana, Fl (our Atlas shows all the WalMarts) and just pull into the WalMart. We stop at 10:30 pm , pulled up next to a Motor Home already there and went to Bed.
